 | 20 YEARS OF THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD: CREATING PLATFORMS FOR CHILDREN TO EXPRESS THEIR VIEWS On 20th November 2009, Uganda will join the rest of the world to mark 20 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and 10 years of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. As a signatory to the two child rights instruments, Uganda is obliged to respect, fulfill and promote children’s rights to survival, development, protection and participation.
Through its engagement at both national and local levels, Uganda Child Rights NGO Network has noted that significant progress has been made to realize children’ rights to protection, development and survival. Policy reforms targeting children have been adopted in various sectors. However, there are still gaps in regard to enforcement of the formulated policies for children. Part of the problem is the fact that many policies are made with complete disregard to children’s views.
